Dick Cheney draws controversy in show of support for Hosni Mubarak

Dick Cheney called Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak is a "good friend" and a "US ally." He did not call for Mubarak to resign, nor would he predict if Mubarak would answer protesters' demands for his prompt departure.

Regardless of his refusal to leave in a prompt and orderly fashion, former Vice President Dick Cheney says the Egyptian leader should be "treated with respect."

"He has been a good man, a good friend and ally to the United States," Cheney said. "We need to remember that."

"I don't want to make a prediction because I don't know," Cheney said with regard to speculation that Mubarak may leave sooner than September. "But I also think there comes a time for everybody when it's time to hang it up and move on and someone else will take over."

"In the end, whatever comes next in Egypt is going to be determined by the people of Egypt," he said.

According to US political opponents of Dick Cheney, the former Vice President failed to defend democracy where it seeks to grow in a politically volatile area in the Middle East.
